According to Texas Statutes § 46.06, it is unlawful for anyone under the age of 18 to own a gun. It is also a crime to make a firearm available to a child. Additionally, according to Texas Statutes § 46.02, it’s illegal to carry a handgun beyond one’s own home. The exception to this, however, is if the gun owner applies for a license that allows them to carry a handgun. A gun owner may be eligible to carry a gun in public provided that they:

- Do not have a charge pending for a Class A misdemeanor, a Class B misdemeanor, or the equivalent offense
- Do not have a prior conviction of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor or the equivalent offense in the past five years
- Are not a fugitive from justice
